The Michigan Auctioneers Association is the professional organization representing auctioneers and the auction industry throughout Michigan. Through education, advocacy, promotion and networking, the MAA works to strengthen the auction profession and provide valuable resources to both auction professionals and the public.

A Michigan Auction Tradition Dating to 1900

For many years, the known history of the Michigan Auctioneers Association began in 1951. Recent historical research has uncovered a much earlier chapter in Michigan auction history.

Newspaper records now document Michigan auctioneers organizing as early as 1900, when the Auctioneers’ Association of Michigan was formed in Detroit. Early accounts describe auctioneers coming together for fellowship, professional advancement and to advocate for standards and licensing intended to protect both auctioneers and the public.

Additional newspaper accounts from the early 1900s document meetings, officers and activities of the organization, demonstrating that Michigan auctioneers had established organized professional representation more than half a century earlier than previously recognized.

As new historical records continue to be discovered, the MAA is working to preserve this important history and tell the story of the auctioneers who helped build the profession in Michigan.

The MAA Today

More than 125 years after Michigan auctioneers first organized, the Michigan Auctioneers Association continues the tradition of bringing auction professionals together.

The MAA provides educational opportunities through conferences, seminars and other programs; represents the interests of the auction industry with government agencies and lawmakers; promotes auctions and professional auctioneers to the public; and provides opportunities for members to network, exchange ideas and strengthen their businesses.

The Association publishes The Michigan Auction Gavel, its award-winning publication, and provides members with industry information, educational resources, professional recognition programs and promotional opportunities.

Through FindMichiganAuctions.com, the MAA also connects the public with professional auctioneers and auctions throughout Michigan.

From the auctioneers who first came together in 1900 to the professionals carrying the industry forward today, the Michigan Auctioneers Association remains committed to education, promotion, advocacy and networking while preserving and advancing Michigan’s auction tradition.
