would notice a big difference in dress and attire.\u00a0 To say we\u2019ve \u2018gone casual\u2019 would be an understatement.\u00a0 I\u2019ll admit that I\u2019m personally uncomfortable with this today\u2019s business attire.\u00a0 I\u2019m probably the odd man out in this trend, but I\u2019ve found a silver lining.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">That silver lining is that\u2019s it\u2019s really easy to dress more professional, more conservative and more powerful than it has ever been.\u00a0 You\u2019re probably with me on the \u2018professional\u2019 and \u2018conservative\u2019 descriptions, but what about the \u2018powerful\u2019 adjective.\u00a0 Let\u2019s discuss that very aspect of our dress<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It\u2019s no surprise when I state that \u201chow we look, appear or dress\u201d forms the vast majority of our first impression.\u00a0 People see what we look like and draw instant conclusions and form instant perceptions.\u00a0\u00a0 Among them are how confident we are, how wealthy we are, what profession we might be in, how educated we are and how we will be to deal with.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">So what\u2019s that got to do with negotiating, getting our way and achieving \u2018good deal\u2019 results?\u00a0 Fasten your seat belts, here it comes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Like it or not, the results we can achieve during a negotiation are influenced by the impressions\/perceptions our opponent has of us.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If they see us as unprofessional, less skilled, less educated, less informed and of a lower standing, they\u2019ll be more aggressive and more resolved to hold out for what they want when negotiating with us.\u00a0 The contrary is also true.\u00a0 If our dress and attire send a message of success, confidence and even slight superiority, our opponent is more likely to grant concessions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When you are about to enter into a negotiating circumstance (a meeting, a trip to a car dealer, an encounter with a vendor or a planning discussion) be the better dressed.\u00a0 We can typically predict the attire and appearance of our opponet.\u00a0 For us to match or, better yet, exceed their level of attire is easy to achieve.\u00a0 Don\u2019t go to their level.\u00a0 Set and achieve your own \u2013 even at the risk of comments by our peers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Will attire alone win the day for a negotiator?\u00a0 Of course not!\u00a0 It will however influence proceedings, impressions, respect levels, credibiltiy and even concession patterns.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In this world of dressing down, casual and even sloppy attire, a negotiator can gain that inperceptaible edge with that easy point of difference\u00a0 \u2013 their personal attire.\u00a0 Don\u2019t be the one to shrug off the importance of attire.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Good negotiators routinely appear more professional than their opponents.<\/p>\n<p><a
